Client: Edinburgh University

Time Scale: 1 day installation

Design Team: Sign Plus Limited

To print, supply and apply a 400m2 banner to a scaffold while one of Edinburgh Universities buildings was undergoing essential maintenance repairs to the roof. A scaffold structure was required in to be fitted to Chambers Street in the heart of the city centre.

The estates department saw this as an opportunity to advertise the University in an unusual and large scale format. Sign Plus carried out a site survey in conjunction with the scaffold contractor to ensure that the structure would be suitable for a banner of this size. The full colour banner was printed on mesh and covers an area of 400m2. It was printed in five sections and heat welded to give a seamless look. The banner was then fixed to the scaffold using elasticated cord and cables allowing flexibility for changing weather conditions. Due to the scale of the banner and location of the building the fitting was carried out during the night by a team of eight fitters with the assistance of three electrical winches.

The banner has now been on display for almost 6 months and is still as eye catching today as it was when it was first installed.
