Client: Scottish Rugby

Location: Murrayfield Stadium

Time Scale: 1 day installation

Design Team: Sign Plus Limited

Back in 2011 Scottish Rugby wished to install large external banners to the East Stand of Murrayfield, Scotland’s National Rugby Stadium. They approached a number of specialist sign companies to offer various solutions and after demonstrating our capabilities Sign Plus was commissioned to undertake the project.

The main remit of the contract was that the banners could be interchangeable and replaced easily, whilst the system had to be aesthetically pleasing and a cost effective solution. Three sample ideas where tried and the client finally chose a solution of steel tubular poles on the front elevation fixed directly to the concrete pillars and a tension wire system top and bottom to bridge the gap between the pillars.

Sign Plus Managing Director, Ken Richards explained that the brief was simple – “supply and install 23, 6m x 5m digitally printed banners between each of the support pillars on the East Stand”. However the installation was a little more involved due to the size of banners, the location and the fitting options. To make the system work a combination of individual bungee ropes with crocodile clips and cable ties were used as this enabled the banners to be changed quickly and efficiently by our installation team using access equipment.

Since then these banners have been interchanged many times appropriate to the match schedule (Edinburgh Rugby, EMC Test Series, 6 Nations). Sign Plus were back on site in February and March this year installing the latest edition of the RBS 6 Nations campaign banners.

Reaction has been very positive and has given this aspect of the stadium a very impressive lift.
